StandUP

Marriage isn't Cool!

Once upon a time, the cool kids got married. Families attended church, prayed in their homes and taught their children about the Savior. Today, marriage isn't cool, church isn't cool, Christianity isn't cool. It's the sad truth.

Only a few years ago, the response to an engagement was congratulations all around. Unless you were marrying a reprobate, marriage was a cause for celebration. The response was immediate and supportive. We were all thrilled!

Fast forward 29 years, I have four children who are married to the in-laws of my dreams! I have come to expect a different response from my friends, neighbors and even family members. When I happily announce that one of my children is getting married, more often than not the response is awkward silence, followed by even more awkward questions.
"How old are they?"
"Are you really happy about this?"
"But aren't they still in college?"
Followed by statements like, "Hopefully they will be engaged for a long time."

Come on people. Why are we such "Debbie Downers" about marriage? Why are we willing to settle for living together? (Not the same thing!) In a world that values freedom over family, man over God, and independence over commitment, How can we StandUP for marriage?
